The company was founded by Spyros Colocassides in 1916. He was later joined by his brother George Colocassides.
The original interest of the firm was the importation of agricultural implements, but very early in its life the firm saw the vast potential of transport equipment in the island and it moved into the field of transport, firstly by importing bicycles and from May 1916 by importing the first car a Ford Model T from Manchester.
Along with transport equipment the need for tyres became apparent and the firm started importing Dunlop tyres in 1914, initially mainly bicycle and motorcycle tyres.
Through the years that First Model T was followed by thousands more Ford cars, light commercials, trucks and tractors and other Ford products, sold through Colocassides, have been a major factor in the expansion of overland traffic in Cyprus. The firm became a leader in the importation of motor vehicles, agricultural tractors, tyres, batteries and other replacement parts.
Credit to purchasers of vehicles and other equipment had been unknown in Cyprus before the firm became one of the pioneers of hire-purchase, when it realised early on that this held the key to quick expansion in the field of transport.
In 1957 the firm was made a Limited Company under the name S & G Colocassides Ltd.
